Lakeside Residence

Big Marine Lake, Minnesota

The views to the lake from this incredible location were the basis of the program for this new home. The owners requested assistance in determining whether to remodel or rebuild on their existing lot. A schematic study of both options was provided along with cost estimates. The results of this process lead to the decision to rebuild, however many limitations had to be overcome due to existing site topography and rigorous new development restrictions. The final plan was carefully sited within inches of setbacks giving remarkable lake views from both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The design of the home was developed around an active space/quiet space programming concept. These two distinct areas are separated by an entry "link". The active side of the home includes a vaulted great room which contains the living room, and kitchen. A fieldstone fireplace is located to one side of the living room with northern views to the lake through a series of oversized double hung windows. The kitchen, located behind the living room, also takes advantage of the same views as well as garden level windows to the south. The dining room is situated in an alcove adjacent to the kitchen. Access to several outdoor areas open off this space including a deck, screen porch, and grill patio. The quiet side of the home accommodates the bedrooms and an open loft area. The loft serves several functions including a reading and t.v. area and a kid's nook. Red birch flooring was selected for its warm tones and durability. Custom maple trim was specified throughout the home. An open, custom built, douglas fir stair gives views to the lake from the entry. John was also retained as construction manager on this project.
