Mountain View Retirement

Red Lodge, Montana

Seeking to return to the west for retirement, the client wanted a house and guesthouse for hosting family, friends and visitors to the area. The low forms respond to the expansive high plains landscape. Deep roof cantilevers protect the home from the western sun while allowing panoramic views of the Absaroka-Beartooth mountain range to the south and west. Set on a heated and stained concrete slab this home maximizes passive solar access along with several other "green" design strategies. These elements include roof mounted, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels. The solar electric system feeds a battery bank for backup and supplies basic electrical needs. A wind generator and a ground source heat pump are other alternative energy options. Due to high well and septic costs; considerations for water recycling, gray-water and rainwater catchment systems were reviewed.
