Rural Remodel

Roberts, Wisconsin

Originally conceived as a second addition; this remodel took advantage of an existing, but featureless addition, to a small split-level home. Through a careful review of the owners' requirements, it was suggested that a reconfiguration of the existing spaces would better meet the owners' needs as well as provide for potential cost savings. Furthermore, a plan was devised that would allow the owners to remain in their home during the remodel. This entailed first finishing the basement as a future mother-in-law apartment. This cozy series of three spaces entailed reversing the stair and relocation of the furnace to most efficiently use the small space.

On the upper floor; to better accommodate the established uses and traffic patterns, the new kitchen was moved from a formerly remote area to a location more central in the home. Preferences to "office" in the kitchen lead to the creation of a small office nook hidden behind a pair of double pocket doors adjacent to the island counter. The backside of the nook defined a new entrance space. The former kitchen space became a quite sitting / living area with a new 3-sided fireplace shared between it and the dining area. Finishes on this floor included cedar ceiling and valance trim, with architect designed lighting fixtures. Flooring choices included select oak hardwood throughout with a random ashlar tile pattern at the entry floor. The fireplace is finished with custom cut tile and a stained and textured concrete hearth.

Other improvements included the creation of a screen porch and hot-tub area under an existing deck. This secluded space incorporates a stained and textured slab and a cedar framed "roof" with corrugated metal sheeting. A new cedar entry trellis was installed along with a stained and textured stoop to provide continuity of exterior spaces. The existing siding was salvaged and reapplied with additional accent trim. John also served as construction manager on this project.
